Why a University of Victoria Students of Colour Collective?

Racism and Gender

Supporting women of colour in terms of the reality of sexism, sexual assault and harassment is vital in the fight against racism and gender oppression. We also want men of colour to confront their own misogyny and the ways in which they contribute to sexual oppression.

Representation

It is apparent that people of colour are under-represented in all positions of university governance, faculty, staff, and student body. To make sure that representation and contribution exists from a wide array of voices, we sit on a variety of committees such as UVSS, Antidote and other university and community organizations.

Lobbying

We are committed to lobbying all levels of governance, from government to university administration to our local University of Victoria Students’ Society Local 44.

Education

We want to be holistic in our education around issues like sexual violence, oppression, poverty and inaccessibility, as well as give voice to our lived experiences as minorities.

Activism

Students of colour across Canada demand issues of systemic racism and inequality to be at the forefront in the development of international, federal and community policies that affect standards of living, immigration and the exploitation of the Third World. At the Students of Colour Collective, we believe that activism comes in many forms: music, writing, rallies, popular media, workshops and awareness campaigns. Through these creative means we educate ourselves and the community so that we can engage in informed ways with issues that affect our lives.
