Meet and Greet

UVic Pride will be having a Meet and Greet event on Friday, October 9th. This is a chance for everyone involved in Pride or interested in getting involved and meeting new people to hang out and consume refreshments. Canadian University Queer Services Conference

UVic Pride will be hosting the fifth annual Canadian University Queer Services Conference on February 5-7, 2010. This is the first time the conference will be coming to the western provinces, so we want to make it a really wonderful event. Organizing is in full swing, and will continue up until the commencement of the conference.

The theme of CUQSC 2010 is Stirring the Alphabet Soup: Celebrating and Exploring Community. In keeping with this theme, we hope to get as much of the local community involved in the conference as possible. Our events and discussions will be centred around the creation and connection of community, and we hope to explore the diversity that the word "queer" encompasses.

The more people we have working on this conference, the more it will engender the theme, so anyone who is interested in helping, please contact us at CUQSC2010 at gmail.com. For more information, check out our blog at cuqsc.blogspot.com.

UVic Pride will continue to be active during the summer. We be in the initial stages of planning of the 5th annual CUQSC. We will be hiring our Conference Coordinator sometime in May. If you're not on the listserve, we had elections and now have new Collective Coordinators, Advocacy Council Rep, UVSS Rep. The Trans* Rep position is unoccupied.

Happily Ever After? Dance!!!

Hey everyone!
Feeling stressed out at the end of term? Come to Pride's dance for queers and allies on April 11th from 7:00 to 10:30 at Vertigo in the SUB. The theme is 'Happily Ever After?', so feel free to dress up in a traditional/non-traditional/subversive/alternative/deconstructionist/parody fairy tale costume. Or not. You can wear regular clothes too. There will be a DJ and dancing and the copious amounts of general awesomeness that one customarily finds at a Pride event. Bus tickets will be available to increase accessibility for community members! So everyone should come! Also, it's free. So, pretty much no excuses. See you there.

Flower Sale!

Yesterday, members of Pride, in conjunction with the UVic chapter of the IVCF (Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship), sold Gerber daisies in the SUB to raise money for HIV/AIDS relief, both locally and globally. We made a good (over $200!) profit, and the proceeds will be split between AVI (AIDS Vancouver Island) and an organization that funds the education of AIDS orphans in Zambia. Thanks to everyone who helped out and everyone who purchased a flower to brighten a not-so-sunny day, and to Vanessa for organizing the fundraiser! We hope to do it again.

SAGM mark 2 Homework!

Hi all!

Here are some things to read over.

First of all is a copy of the text of the visioning that is currently under consideration. A working group has been struck to address the concerns that were expressed during the SAGM, and a revised version should hopefully meet with the collective's approval. Any comments, suggestions, or concerns should be emailed to uvicpride@uvss.uvic.ca before March 26th so that they may be addressed by the working group.

Secondly, here is a revised draft of the new constitution that has had its formatting fixed, and should have fewer typos. While (now that there exists time) further revisions/corrections are likely, this should be close to the final version. Once again, any comments, suggestions, or concerns should be emailed to uvicpride@uvss.uvic.ca, or feel free to come by the office and if one of us is around who has worked on the document, we may be able to clairify.

Finally a reminder that in order to finish discussion of the "Vision, Mission, Values, and Goals", as well as approve the rewritten constitution and elect a new Coordinating Committee, the second half of the SAGM will be held on Wednesday April 8th, time and location to be announced. (To keep up to date, check the calendar often!) Everyone is encouraged to attend in order to contribute to these important decisions.

Excerpt from March Newsletter

Pride has been gaining all kinds of momentum and starting work on lots of new projects. We are participating in the referendum question (green ballot) that asks students to raise NSU, SOCC, Women’s Center and Pride to $2 each. This would be three times the funding we receive now and could greatly expand our capacity, so tell your friends to vote YES for Equality.

We are also trying to find a larger space for the Pride office in the SUB because our current space is not as functional as we would like it to be. The volunteer training is being worked on by Theo Naven and will be ready for the Summer Term. The Constitution is being worked on and will be presented for approval at the SAGM on March 18th.

We have hired a paid coordinator as well as a workstudy, and will be hiring an additional workstudy soon. We will also need to fill two coordinator positions as well as others at the SAGM.

Miryam has been facilitating a discussion group on Monday nights in SUB BO28 at 6 pm. The group has been attracting lots of new participants and speaking about different queer-related topics each week. This is the first issue of our newsletter, but look for it every month! Hope your exams go well!

January 14th Meeting Highlights

Hey all! We had a meeting yesterday, and though the minutes are up I thought I'd highlight a few of the more important details.

Volunteer Training: The Volunteer Training session this Sunday, the 18th, will be in SUB room B028. The training will include: office know how, queer 101, anti-oppression, and feedback on the training. There will be food.

CUQSC: As some people may know, we are sending a large contingent to Guelph, ON for the Canadian University Queer Services Conference. There is a chance we will make a bid to have the conference here next year, to finally get it on the west coast. If you have any thoughts, or want to get involved let us know! We are especially interested in help from people who speak French. (uvicpride [at] uvss.uvic.ca)

Homoswim: We have been informed that it will be continuing this year so if you are interested check out the group on Facebook (Swimming with Homos), and/or stay tuned for details!

Camosun Survey: Camosun College is trying to put together some sort of queer-friendly business directory. If you have suggestions, or would like to get involved I suggest you contact Cristian at "pride [at] camosunstudent.org".

The long awaited Pride Office Coordinator position is finally posted! New year's business!

So we just had a quick, short notice, first meeting of the year (please check the minutes for full details) and there was a lot on the table! Most importantly, meetings are now going to be on Wednesdays at 6:30, which was decided on as it was best for the largest number of people who responded to the survey.

Other important news: There will be a volunteer training session on January 18th from 1pm - 4pm. It will cover office know how, Queer 101, anti-oppression, and feedback on Volunteer training. There will be food. Stay tuned for more details!

Other events coming up include:

Our new discussion group, which will be an informal venue where we can meet to discuss topics relevant to the queer community. Meetings will be Monday nights at 6pm in the SUB (look in Pride office for location), starting next week, where the topic will be Community.

Another all-ages dance, to be held about a week before Valentine's Day, possibly in conjunction with another group. Keep an eye out for further details!

Our SAGM, which will be held on March 18th, 2009.

Club and Course Union Days, which will be January 14th (Wednesday) and 15th (Thursday). So come out and help/visit us at our booth!

Button party, hopefully on Friday, from about noon on. Assuming we can get the button maker we will be making buttons and will need all the help we can get! Buttons are awesome and sold for fundraising. Feel free to send us ideas!

Also, a reminder that we are planning to have some sort of poster campaign to help raise our profile on campus. At the moment we are not visible enough or easy enough for people to find. Any ideas for posters, or offers to help produce/distribute these posters would be appreciated.

Lastly, a reminder to return library resources when finished. Also if you have something that hasn't been checked out properly (so we don't know where it is) please let us know you have it.

Hello all!

Now that we're back from our time off, it's time to start the ball rolling again. We've got lots of exciting things on the drawing board, so come and get involved and help them happen! In the works are some amazing volunteer training, a discussion group, more yoga, hopefully another dance, and lots of visioning and constitution writing. If any of these things seem interesting to you, or if you have other ideas of what we should be doing, email mielburns (at) gmail.com, which will put you in contact with Miryam, one of the collective coordinators, and she'll put you in contact with the people and resources you'll need.

Before any of that, though, respond to the emails in your inbox with the headline "When shall we meet?" so we can figure out when we can get together to make all these wonderful things happen! Just follow the link and check off all the times that you are available. Please do this as soon as possible, so we can get the meetings going right away. If you're having any problems, just email uvicpride (at) uvss.uvic.ca and we'll help you out.

Pre-holiday Reminders!

Hey all,
Two reminders for you. The homospun dance is tomorrow (Thursday). Homospun is a non-profit collective that is holding a "What D'Ya Wanna Be When Ya Grow Up?" themed dance. It is at the Victoria Events Centre from 9PM to 2AM. It is a 19+ event with admission on a sliding scale from $5-10. See our calendar.

Uvic Pride is holding a poster contest. We are looking to re-vamp our look, and increase our visibility on campus. Submissions will be taken at Pride collective meetings in the new year. Also, please remember to bring back books and DVDs to the library before the holidays if you don't plan to use them!

This just in: Pride Dance Was Awesome!

We had our "Welcome to the Hellmouth" dance last night, and it was wonderful! More then 45 people showed up despite the akward timing and exams and such. Some people dressed up, and there were some wonderful costumes.

Most of the night we had DJ Chris Poynter keeping us up and dancing to the best of what is and what was. We were also lucky enough to have The Novamatics come play some live ska music.

I hope everyone had a wonderful time, (I know I did) and we are hoping to put together another event in the early new year! So stay tuned, good luck on exams, and have a wonderful winter break! (If it can be called winter without snow...)

Cora's introduction

Hello! My name is Cora Babey and I am one of your three coordinators. I was just elected at the AGM in November, and I figured I should introduce myself since I'm new to the school.

I am originally from Calgary, but moved to Nanaimo in 2005 and really love Vancouver Island. I completed my Social Services Diploma at Malaspina UC (now, VI University) and moved to Victoria. In September 2008 I started my Social Work degree at UVic and am looking forward to completing my MEd in Counselling Psychology within next 6 years or so.

I've been volunteering with different grass roots queer organizations since I was 13 and I really enjoy this sort of peer run advocacy, especially in the school enviornment. One of my proudest achievments is explained here: www.priderainbowproject.com and I attempted to start a queer group at Malaspina but really struggled to gain recognition and funding.

I have attended the 1st University Queer Services Conference in Ottawa, and the University Roundtable Discussion for Sexualized Violence in Saskatoon.

I'm really excited to become involved with UVic Pride, work with Miryam and Andrew, and am so thankful you chose to elect me, even as a new student.

I am most excited to concentrate my efforts on creating a truely supportive enviornment for people who come to us for help.

AGM Complete!!!!

We had our AGM last night, and here is your quick recap for those who weren't there:

The visioning was discussed, and several problems were identified. There will be more visioning sessions in the new year (starting in January), and a final daft will be presented at the SAGM in the spring.

A resignation letter from collective coordinator Chris T. was read.

The suggestions for the rewritten constitution (first motioned at the last AGM) were amended and passed provisionally until the SAGM. At the SAGM a new and revised constitution reflecting concerns that were raised and the visioning will be presented. The position of Camosun Rep was also added.

Elections then followed and the new additions are as follows:
Collective Coordinator: Cora
Financial Coordinator: Mirko
Trans* Representative: Em
Camosun Representative: Emily

As a reminder, the rest of the executive is:
