January 21, 2010
Attending: Cam, Ilaina, Calamity, Conrad, Alyssa, Cora, Trevor, Bromwyn, Gabrielle, Rachel, Emma, Miryam, Andrew. Dann, Lara, Rachel, Julia, Ariel, Brandi, Jules
(Also attending, not voting: Maris, Kate)
Agenda:
1) CUQSC Update:
- Volunteers and billeters still needed.
- Events are almost all in place.

2) Dann:
- Dann is doing an honors in sociology, and wants to do an institutional ethnography on Pride.
- The report focuses on methods of peer support.
- While the report will be anonymous, there will be a focus group to start out with.
- The best time for a focus group seems to be Wednesday evening, starting at 7 PM.
- Dann’s email is: hoxsey@uvic.ca

3) YPY:
-UVic Pride has a seat on the UVSS board of directors—anything brought to the board, we have a vote. Gabrielle holds the position currently.

Youth Protecting Youth is a pro-life group on campus. Clubs Council is a group that has all the different clubs and they decide how all the funding is allocated. They can vote to deny funding to one or more of the clubs. For the past few terms, they have voted to give funding to YPY, and the UVSS has overridden that ruling and denied funding. We need to decide what Pride is going to say on the vote.

A round is being done. Opinions include: Pride’s mandate is not to be involved in this particular issue, Because control over one’s body is a queer issue YPY should be disallowed, YPY should be allowed funding as a freedom of expression issue, YPY’s postering is coercive and should not be funded, We can’t accurately represent the whole of Pride so we should abstain, abortion is a queer issue since it involves queer people, Pride should exercise their vote to vote for the student population and protect the funds used for their tuition, Posters used by YPY have been deemed “harassment” and should be denied funding on that matter.

On YPY’s breaking promises: They promised they would not bring the Genocide Awareness Project to campus, and they did. However, YPY says that they only brought the person who runs the genocide awareness project, not the project itself.

Vote:

FUND YPY - 2

ABSTAIN FROM THE YPY VOTE – 10

DO NOT FUND YPY – 7

ABSTAIN FROM THIS PARTICULAR VOTE – 1

4) Gabrielle’s opinion
Motioned by Lara that Gabrielle only express Pride’s opinion at the upcoming vote, not her own.
Maris disagrees and believes that Gabrielle should express herself however she wants..
All in favor.
Passed.
