REFERENDUM

In addition to elections to the BoD, the Elections Office is in charge of running referendum questions brought forth by UVSS members.  All members of the the UVSS have the right to propose a question to be considered via referendum regarding student fees, issues or other UVSS matters.  Referenda may only be called between the months of September to April (inclusive) via one of two methods; a majority vote of a quorate meeting of the UVSS  BoD, or a petition signed by no less than 10% of UVSS members.  Referendum questions are normally posed to members in conjunction with the elections to the BoD (February/March), or as deemed necessary by the UVSS Board.

Once a question is called (passed by the UVSS Board of Directors, or the requisite number of signatures is obtained), a Referendum Form must be filled out and submitted to the UVSS Elections Office (SUB B211) before the close of the nomination period.

Individuals wishing to be the official opponent of a referendum question are requested to fill out the Official Opponent Form and submit it to the UVSS Elections Office.

REFERENDUM QUESTIONS CALLED

For the 2012 Spring term, currently two referendum questions have been called by the UVSS Board of Directors:

Question 1: At no cost to students, do you support reallocating $0.50 per full-time student and $0.25 per part-time student from the Building and Capital Fund to a new dedicated Government Relations and Outreach fund that will be used solely for quality research and lobby efforts directed at various levels of government and the University on the issues of post-secondary education, affordable housing, public transit, sexualized violence and campus sustainability?

Question 2: Do you support a directive to the UVSS Board of Directors, to ask the University of Victoria to create an exception to the smoking ban that would allow the Hempology 101 Club to hold their weekly meeting at the UVic Central quad?
